Major maintenance is planned on the A10 North and the A8 during summer 2020

Major repairs to two major arteries on the north side of Amsterdam will start in three months. Rijkswaterstaat closes the A10 North in both directions and the A8 towards Amsterdam. The extra travel time can reach more than an hour.

Major maintenance is planned on the A10 North and the A8 almost all summer. These roads must be closed in one direction for several weeks to apply new asphalt, replace joints and improve rainwater runoff. The two directions of the A10 North are tackled one after the other, but partly overlap with the closure of the A8.

A10 North inner ring
The A10 North towards Utrecht is closed from July 3, 9 p.m. to July 13, 5 a.m. between junction Coenplein and exit S114 (IJburg). To reach the intermediate connections S118, S117, S116, S115, exit S114, traffic must detour via the A10 West, South and East to the outer ring of the A10 North which is open.

A8 towards Amsterdam
The A8 towards Amsterdam is closed from July 12 at 9 p.m. to August 11 at 5 a.m. between the N246 and the Zaandam junction. The second part of the A8, between the Zaandam and Coenplein junction, is simply open. Although the closure only concerns the direction of Amsterdam (the direction of Alkmaar, Beverwijk, Zaanstad remains available), exits 2 (Zaandijk) and 3 (Zaandijk-West) are closed in the last two weeks of July. Traffic will have to detour via the A7 connection Zaandijk (2). The work on the A8 will continue 7 days a week, day and night, in order to minimize the traffic disruption.

A10 North outer ring
The A10 North towards Zaanstad / Coentunnel is closed from July 31 9 p.m. to 10 August 5 a.m. between the Watergraafsmeer junction and the Coenplein junction. To reach the intermediate connections S114, S115, S116, S117, exit S118, traffic must detour via the A10 East, South and West to the inner ring of the A10 North which is open.

Serious nuisance
The large-scale works are planned in the summer because it is relatively quiet on these roads. Other activities and events have also been taken into account as much as possible. Nevertheless, Rijkswaterstaat warns against noise and serious traffic nuisance on the highways and urban roads in Amsterdam and Zaanstad. Traffic must take into account extra crowds and delays of up to more than an hour. There may also be nuisance from preparatory work in the days leading up to full closure.

The Corona measures have an impact, also on the work of Rijkswaterstaat. It is the responsibility of Rijkswaterstaat to keep the critical infrastructure (roads, waterways and water system) running. For this reason, the above maintenance work will continue as planned for the time being.
