[ENGLISH BELOW]

What does it mean to be human? What is man's role in society? In other words, what is the meaning of life? It is these questions that are central to the impressive oeuvre of Swedish filmmaker and playwright Ingmar Bergman. In beautiful imagery full of metaphors and symbolism, Bergman undertakes a quest for the answers from philosophical, theological and psychological perspectives. Not that he finds unequivocal answers; after all, the search is more important than the finding. What is clear is that life is complex and unpredictable, something Bergman does more than justice to in his film. Not for nothing is he considered one of the greatest filmmakers in the history of cinema, who to this day inspires filmmakers all over the world.

Bergman was born on 14 July, 1918 in Uppsala, Sweden. His father was a Lutheran pastor, so at an early age he was confronted with theological issues and religious images. For his university studies, he moved to Stockholm. It was there that he became interested in theatre and film, which would eventually lead to over sixty films. The first, Crisis, dates from 1946; his big break came with the also commercially successful 1953 Summer with Monika. Since then, many masterpieces followed, which also won numerous international film awards, including three Oscars, a Golden Bear (Berlin) and an honorary Golden Palm at Cannes for his entire oeuvre.

In 1965, Bergman moved to Fårö, a small island in the Baltic Sea. He had come to know it thanks to his regular cameraman Sven Nykvist when the latter recommended the island to him as the ideal location for 1961's Through a Glass Darkly. In his home there, he died in his sleep on 30 July 2007, 16 days after his 89th birthday.

Under the title Best of Bergman, Rialto will present a small retrospective of nine films from the early part of his career from 17 March, including Summer with Monika and Through a Glass Darkly. His films can be seen at Rialto VU.
